There is a key difference with other portage pads. These don’t wrap into the top of the rim, lifting the skirt and creating a leak point in the seal, and they’re adjustable so they line up with your shoulder whether you carry your boat nose up or down, or loaded with gear. 

Lastly, if you think portage padding is a gimmick you can just take them out in seconds. You’re not committed to them. It’s not a lifestyle choice.

They can be installed onto any backband system that has an exposed strap or rope.
